Critical Facility & Equipment Upgrades Needed for the Department of Public Safety
The Department of Public Safety plays a vital role in protecting our community. However, our aging facility and outdated equipment are placing a growing burden on our personnel and compromising our ability to safely and effectively serve the public. Several critical issues must be addressed:
Lack of ADA Accessibility
Our current facility does not meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. This limits access for members of the public and restricts inclusivity in our operations. Upgrading our infrastructure is essential to ensure compliance and accessibility for all.
Inadequate Ventilation in Key Areas
The indoor gun range, gun cleaning room, and shower facilities all suffer from poor or non-existent ventilation. This presents serious health risks for staff regularly exposed to lead particles, chemical fumes, and high humidity environments. Proper air handling systems are essential to protect the long-term health of our personnel.
Mold and Contamination Concerns
Moisture issues have led to mold growth in several parts of the building, which can cause respiratory problems and other health complications. In addition, the facility lacks a designated decontamination space, placing first responders at risk of spreading hazardous materials to themselves and others after returning from emergency calls.
Lack of Secondary Turnout Gear
Currently, a majority of our firefighters do not have access to a second set of turnout gear, which is vital for maintaining safety while contaminated gear is being cleaned. This not only compromises responder health but also increases response time and risk during consecutive emergency events.
Asbestos Exposure Risk
The existing floor tiles contain asbestos, posing a long-term health threat. While currently encapsulated, any damage or renovation could disturb the material, making its safe removal a priority before further deterioration occurs.
Obsolete Aerial Ladder Truck
Our aerial ladder truck is over 20 years old and is approaching the end of its service life. This essential piece of equipment is critical for high-angle rescues, firefighting in multi-story buildings, and other emergency operations. A modern replacement is urgently needed to maintain operational readiness.
These deficiencies are not just inconveniences—they represent genuine safety, health, and compliance risks. Upgrading our facility and equipment is no longer optional; it's a necessary investment in the safety of our first responders and the community they serve. Together, we can build a safer, more resilient future.
